I bought a couple HD's on friday, I'm up to a total 7 harddrives along with my dvd writer. Absolutely full. Computer must weigh 60 pounds. Anyhow, I've got my sata ports filled with my two 10krpm 74gb raptors, and two of my newly acquired 300gb 16mb 7200rpm drives. Over on the ide side of things, I've got my old 120gb (which I think is failing) my not so old 250gb 8mb 7200rpm, and my new 300gb 16mb 7200rpm drive.
So in total, thats 7 drives across 4 channels, comes out to about 1.4 terabytes, and since you lose about 4% when formatting, about 1.35 terabytes.
Now I know what you're both saying, what is he going to do with all that storage? Well first off, not putting anything in RAID, I've never had a system fail on me from a bad drive before, the signs are usually prevalent long before it happens. And I can't keep my current setup with the two raptors in raid because the controller wont let me have half of the devices in raid and the other half in jbod. So to start the 74gb's will get split into my system drive and my installed games/programs drive. That leaves 5 drives, 3x300gb drives a 250gb and a 120gb. The 120gb is failing, so I'm going to put as much work on it as possible without making it to important - download drive - high usage, nothing permanent, easy data to recover. So then that leaves 1.1TB for storage. Well I'm moving all my old media back from DVD. Lets see how long it takes to fill it up.
