Annual Halloween Bash 06

The annual Halloween bash took place last night, lots of fun was had. As has become a staple of parties of late, Guitarhero multiplayer was played. Costume prizes were awarded, drinks were drunk, Halloween themed snacks were consumed. My costume was created at the last minute with some illustrated help from my rope tying book. The original costume I had planned was Magnum PI, unfortunately last minute shopping, left me high and dry for all the supplied I needed. Who would have thought that a red Hawaiian shirt was so hard to find? Well, live and learn. Next year I'll start planning earlier than Halloween weekend.

Robert Smith of the Cure? No, No, that's just a suicide zombie school girl.

Halloween Movie Premiere

music playing: 30 Seconds to Mars - Buddha For Mary
A friend of ours who is an actress, is in a new movie which premiered on Saturday. It was some b-movie zombie flick, and was really quite terrible. Sure the movie had it's moments, there were some good makeup effects, and the way they worked in to the the plot completely plausible scenarios for having every single girl in the movie have a topless scene, those were good. But the acting for the most part was horrible, the story was retarded, even the sound effects were screwed up. Our friend was the girlfriend of the bad guys in the film, and like all the other girls in the film, had a topless scene. But out of everyone else, hers made the least sense. She just walked by the scene topless while pulling her shirt on... for absolutely no reason.
When the movie ended we bailed as to avoid that awkward "wow that movie was retarded" conversation. You may have noticed that I haven't mentioned the name of the movie, and that is because I can't even remember, that is how much I'm trying to repress the memory of this movie.

Mark's Birthday

10.19.06 - 11:46pm

Today was Mark aka Ratboys birthday party. He chose Insomniacs for dinner and martinis. A nostalgic place for the gang since back in high school we use to hang out there and at the pool hall next door all the time, said pool hall is now a Tim Hortons, but luckily Insomniacs is still there.

The party was quite fun, I got to catch up with everyone from school whom I don't get to see nearly as much these days. While catching up, I found out that Gill wrecked her car in an accident two days ago while driving down the 427 with Maria, which was a bit freaky. They are okay but Maria, whacked her head on the dash pretty hard, but shes okay.
I'm tired now so I'm done writing.

Concert: Sparta 2006 Three's Tour

10.16.06 - 12:24am

Back in 2002, System of A Down had a concert at the Kool Haus as part of their Toxicity tour, it sold out in minutes and we did not get tickets for it. Desperate to see the show, we went down to venue early to see if there was anyone selling extra tix, and to see how much the scalpers were asking. We found no extras, and the scalpers were charging $150 a ticket!!! Pissed off we went to eat and bitch about the show, during this bitching I came up with a simple idea. Go to Ticketmaster, and buy any concert ticket with a band whose name starts with the letter S. After checking Now magazine for concert listings, we found that this band Sparta whom we had never heard of were having a show for $10, so we went over to Sunrise and got 5 tickets.
The scam worked like a charm and we got into the show with the fake tickets, and we like to think that our scam is responsible for the fact that these days the venues laser scan the tickets as you walk to in to verify their legitimacy, but this is not the point of the story. The point is that, back then I had no idea who Sparta was.
Today I am well aware that they are the awesome remainder of the once great band At The Drive-in, three albums deep into their post Drive-in carrers. Being a huge fan since hearing their first album, I always kicked myself for not having gotten extra tickets to check them out when we pulled off the System of A Down scam.

Regardless of the past, the point of this post is tonight's show. The opening band were some local, forgettable guys from Hamilton. The next band were Sound Team, whom I quite enjoyed and have to investigate further.

Sparta them selves were fantastic. Their Post-Hardcore/Emo/Experimental sound is quite unique and Jim Ward's voice is even more amazing live than on record. They opened up with Breaking The Broken from Porcelain, followed by La Cerca off the same album, this got the crowd going. But it was not until the third song that things took off. That song was Light Burns Clear off their first album Wiretap Scars, from my vantage point of front-row right in the mosh pit, it sounded like the entire venue was singing along to the song, I sure know I was. During the rest of their set, they performed pretty much all my favourte tracks, such as Glasshouse Tarot, While Oceana Sleeps, Rx Coup, Guns of Memorial Park, etc. Did I mention how great Jim sounded singing all these songs?

At one point, while the band took a moment to catch their breath, Jim was talking to the crowd and he made the most amusing of comments. He said "Next time you vote, don't elect a guy that spends so much time with our president, by the way I'm sorry about the past six years", everyone laughed, and cheered on the sentiment, it was very amusing.

I'm going to wrap this up with a complete setlist, and by saying that the level of passion the entire band showed during their set was amazing. I can't wait to see them again.
  • Breaking The Broken
  • La Cerca
  • Light Burns Clear
  • Rx Coup
  • Untreatable Disease
  • Unstitch Your Mouth
  • Glasshouse Tarot
  • Guns of Memorial Park
  • Assemble the Empire
  • Tensioning
  • Taking Back Control
  • While Oceana Sleeps
  • Weather the Storm
  • Air
  • Cut Your Ribbon
  • Atlas
My arms are tied behind disease
I'll probably be gone the next time too
In a corner in a shadow I sit self-obsessesed
Too busy, too important to say goodbye

Yeah the tarot broke, open the glasshouse
So this might just be the saddest day I've ever known
Yeah the tarot broke, open the glasshouse
And this might just be the saddest day I've ever known

SBC's 11th Annual Snowboard Show Party

This year SBC threw their annual party at the Dock's, which was a strange change of venue, but good none the less.

As always plenty of swag was raffled off, and there were plenty product tosses. I think I lost some skin during one of those grab fests. But t'was all in good fun. I walked away with a Burton DVD, some panties, and a Forum toque. I'm not entirely certain that they were giving away panties, so I may just have ripped them off some chick in the frenzy that is known as the product toss.

They premiered two movies at the party, Whiteout's Wear It Well and Forum's That. The consensus was that Whiteout's movie was better.

As is a yearly tradition, we hit the 2006 Snowboard show at the CNE today. I was thinking about getting a new board, in particular this really nice freestyle board made by Option, but ultimately I talked myself out of dropping $400 on something that wasn't THAT necessary since my current board is still in good shape for this season.

However I did pick up a new Burton jacket, some polarized Anon goggles, and this DVD which I had been searching for ever since seeing it in Whistler, the movie in question: Never Trust a Man With A Moustache. It is a great flick made by the Whistler based, Skids Productions crew.

Toxic carrot juice paralyzes 2 in Toronto

Two Toronto residents are paralyzed after drinking carrot juice that tested positive for a botulism toxin, according to the city's public health department.

"There are two adults who are severely ill in hospital and they had a history of drinking the exact same juice that's been part of the carrot juice recall," Dr. Elizabeth Rea, an associate medical officer of health, told the Toronto Star on Sunday.

One of the three brands of recalled carrot juice.

GREAT, this is the exact brand of carrot juice I drink, and in fact have in my fridge as we speak. Good thing I haven't died, I guess thats something to bring up during thanks giving dinner.

30 countries, five years, sixty hours, $65 million dollars, HDTV.

Atlas is quite an ambitious project by Discovery HD. They are going to cover 30 countries in five years, all in beautifully filmed, high-definition splendour.

The first episode, China:Revealed was on tonight, and it was awesome. The beautiful country side, the bustling cities, the Great Wall, everything looked amazing.

Ever since Planet Earth ended on CBC:HD last week, I have been having HD documentary withdrawals, and this new series is just the methadone supplement the doctor ordered.
