Upon first hearing about this movie, I thought that it sounded a lot like the story behind The Animatrix: Renaissance part 1. But it turns out that, although they had a similar premise, this movie played out much differently than the Renaissance, and was quite enjoyable.
I'm not going to ruin the story for you so I'll just put things in a nutshell, and here is that shell: For the first time ever a robot has killed a human, this breaks the 3 laws that govern the behavior of robots, and people refuse to believe it. Will Smith enters the picture and fun ensues.
The 3 laws of robotics go something like this:
if(action() != "hurt human") {
continue;
}
elseif(command() == "from human" && action() != "hurt human") {
continue;
}
elseif(action() == "protect self" && action() != "hurt human" && command() != "from human") {
continue;
}
Or in layman's terms:
1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2) A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Now those are some good laws, and make sense. But once you start thinking about it you start to see some problems. In fact one of the best things about the movie is that it really gets your mind going on the subject of
A.I., robotics, dreaming of electric sheep, etc.
For instance, you could in theory have a robot war breakout since robot on robot violence is not prohibited by the 3 laws. Some sort of robot civil war... humm that's an interesting idea. But that's not what happens in the movie so don't worry about me having spoiled anything. I'm just talking about some hypotheticals of what could go wrong with those laws.
So we've established that the story and themes in the movie are good, now lets move on to the production side of things.
Product placement was a tad too rampant, but I guess that's to be expected of a summer blockbuster. The nerd in me liked the fact that US Robotics became the largest company in the world, I just wonder if they made their money off the Sporster or off the Courier modems : )
The special effects were pretty good. Although the whiteish/translucent material they used on the NS-5 robots looked far too early 2000 CG, for my liking. Some of the photogrametry shots they did, like on the catwalks, looked pretty damn cool.
In conclusion, go watch the movie.
