Well I'm just getting in from watching Return of the King. I went to see it with Jcloth, cranky chinese lady, her pussy whipped boyfriend, and nerd girl and her nerd girlfriends.

The movie was alright, I'm not as overly impressed with it as some people out there. I didn't get as emotionally attached to the story as some of the people that started to cry when Frodo left at the end.

The battles were cool, but some of the CG effects could have used the help of some global illumination. A few nit picks here and there are all I have, but over all it was a decent flick. Like I said nothing overwhelming, just decent.

And here go a few of my nitpicks before I head off to bed.

Whats with that wizard? I thought he got promoted from a grey to a white wizard in the second movie. I figured that sort of promotion brought with it some sort of new skills and/or powers. But it seems like all he can do is shine some light from his walking stick. The damn hobbits can do that with their glowsticks. So really thats not all that impressive of a skill. You'd figure a wizard could at least be able to shoot a damn fireball or something, but nope, he's gotta get some hobbit to run up the mountain to light a pyre. Well maybe making fire is not his forté, maybe he's one of them power of water and wind wizards and he can put them out... nope wait we saw him handle fires, he just sorta jabs at em with his stick and lets the hobbit pull people out of them. So then maybe he's just one of them crazy old men that run around in their bathroom slippers and claim to be wizards.

Speaking of characters in the movie I'm talking about: I think there was far too few scenes with the dreamy Orlando Bloom, nerd girl agreed with me, chinese chick did NOT.
And speaking of unresolved endings. You'd think that in one of the 26 ending scenes they'd tell us what happend to Saruman, I mean they only did spend 6+hrs showing a bunch of people trying to get him. But in the end they just tell us that he's up in a tower and the trees willl keep an eye on him. Great, thats just GREAT stuff.

I'm sure there was plenty more I complained about since I was getting quite bitchy near the end from my being so sleepy. But you'll have to ask Jcloth or nerdgirl about that because I can't recall much else. Other then the fact that there was no nude Liv Tyler scene, and I was really looking forward to seeing her as a nude elf with cute pointy ears.

[addendum] It's been suggested that to get a fuller understanding of the story I should read the books to see all the good stuff that was cut out of the movie. To which i reply, nah. The movies did not do a good job in making me care enough to look into it any further. Tim did read the books, and he still thinks the movie sucked. And from what he's telling me, the books certainly did sound more interesting than watching Frodo and the fay guy climb up a hill, for what seemed like an eternity.

So to reiterate, I thought the trilogy was half way decent, but will most likely not be joining The Middle Earth Historical Reenactment Society.
