I think some people have trouble with the concepts of fiction and nonfiction.
To assist in the education of others I am providing the information below
Fiction
1 a : something invented by the imagination or feigned; specifically : an invented story
b : fictitious literature (as novels or short stories)
c : a work of fiction; especially : NOVEL
2 a : an assumption of a possibility as a fact irrespective of the question of its truth
Nonfiction
: literature that is not fictional
Both from Merriam-Webster's Dictionary
Now that we all know that. If you are writing a piece of fiction you should state it to be so, as some people may take what you are saying for the truth and I know no one wants to mislead anyone. Before anyone starts with the not always believing everything you read, I say even if you do not believe what you read it imposes an idea or opens you up to easier acceptance of a similar fact, if you hear this similar point from another source even if unbeknownst to you the secondary source is using the original false idea as a basis for their information. This is almost like broken telephone, with the exception that people may be unaware that they are perpetuating a falsehood.
