I lost a 14, going on 15 year member to my family tonight. My eel died.
As per the previous blog, I cleaned the fish tank tonight, but it wasn't anything I added to toxify the water... the eel just didn't have it. He had been acting very strange, days prior to me cleaning the tank. I think he finally ran out of gas on life.
This may seem insignificant to most, but just imagine having a living creature for that many years, to just watch it die right in front of your eyes. I knew what was going on as soon as I saw it. I had once watched another fish kill itself after its mate died. So the routine wasn't anything new to me.
As much of a pain in the ass as he was to keep... even forcing me to have a ridiculous amount of gravel, just so I could keep plants, it's going to be very strange to think that he's not going to be there anymore.
...and don't tell me fish don't have feelings, because his only companion is just sitting there doing nothing. Where normally, he'd be swimming around as if the world were his oyster.
