I took back control of the site at the start of February I believe (??) and since then, I've been working towards a goal that I didn't have, with a timeframe I never set, and a guarantee to work an undertermined amount of hours on it per night.
Well kids, It's finally here... and I have http://hosting.bashtard.com to show for my efforts.
The hosting service provides:
Apache w/ mod_rewrite and XML extensions
PHP 5 w/ compressed caching module
MySQL 4
In reality, I only decided to do this about a month ago when someone said to me, I'd need MySQL to be able to host anything with you. TADA... MySQL is installed!! But I didn't let it stop there. I hear too many horror stories about people getting hacked, blah blah blah, so I decided to crack down on security as well.
a. No more ICMP allowed at the router level
b. Firewalls on each server (service dependant)
c. Tweaking security on all services
Then... if anyone gets bitchy, I also installed mod_throttle. I can throttle your ass to a certain bandwidth speed and/or volume. If we agree on 3 gigz of bandwidth and you go over, you get one of those: "Sorry, but this douchebag has gone over his bandwidth limit, come back at the start of next month when the douchebag's site will be visible again" ..OR.. if you go over the allocated speed, people get: "This douchebag is taking too much of my bandwidth, wait a few seconds then hit refresh".
The last step was restricting shell access whilst still allowing FTP. Thanks to my own investigative reporting and Sinned being channeled through McFly, that was the easiest and least time consuming of all required modifications.
In closing... you know you're a loser when:
a. you're laying in bed with a woman and giggling about using a PHP_include to contact the MySQL database that's located on a separate server
b. you're tail -f(ing) your log and watching the throttle to see how much bandwidth is being used while people are browsing
GETTING LAID??? WHAT'S THAT??
